Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
The majority of Americans seek opportunities to be happy. We invest in trips, cruises and visits to amusement parks to the tune of billions of dollars a year. We seek entertainment by going to shows, concerts and state fairs paying more billions of dollars.
What people fail to understand is that happiness comes from within, not from external source. The laughter that came when you heard a good joke is gone as soon as the memory of the joke disappears. We plan vacations and when one is over in order to keep that good feeling going, we must begin to plan for the next one.
The Bible tells us a simple truth.
1 Timothy 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.
Contentment brings a smile to our faces. Simple things with contentment are wonderful treasures. Watching grand babies at play or watching their first tee ball game brings joy to our hearts if we are content. Holding a puppy or a kitten, watching newly hatched chicks or ducklings, watching a baby goat at play all give us something money can’t buy, happiness.
I read once that a man was pondering the statement, “Money can’t buy happiness.” He concluded that he like to try it anyway. I wish we felt the same way about contentment. I’d like you to try it anyway. We might be in poor circumstances, poor health, or in a poor monetarily situation, but none of those things can keep us from being content if we chose to see it as God sees it.
We are God’s children, one and all. Each of us is unique, different and has varying talents, but all of us are loved. Each of us is good at something. If we use that for the Lord, He will bless us for it. Look at what the Apostle Paul told the Corinthian Church.
2 Corinthians 7:4 Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation.
So Paul looked at what they could become instead of what they had been. He understood the words of the old Christian song, It Will Be Worth it All.
It will be worth it all, When we see Jesus, Life’s trials will seem so small,
When we see Christ. One glimpse of His dear face,
All sorry will erase. So bravely run the race,
Till we see Christ!
