1Chronicles 4:23 These were the potters, and those that dwelt among plants and hedges: there they dwelt with the king for his work.
The king had work he needed done. These men were required to do what the king needed accomplished. They were judged by their work. The king did not need nor want inferior work. These people lived where they worked and the king saw work on a daily basis. They lived with the King and wroght in his work. We can learn from that.
The king needs many people and their talents vary as the need varies. A few of the needs are: 1. Soldiers. 2. Watchmen. 3. Heralds. 4. Scribes. 5. Musicians. 6. Potters. 7. Servants.
Soldiers are necessary for any kingdom. All those in the position of authority need soldiers. 2Timothy_2:3-4 “Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”
Watchmen are needded in any kingdom. A position of watchman is very important. He identifies the enemy and calls it to the attention of the king and his soldiers. He is the first to warn the people. Isaiah_62:6 “I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the LORD, keep not silence,”
A king needs heralds. A herald declares the king’sd message to his people. If people take the time to listen, they will be informed as to what the king’s commands are. Daniel 3:4 “Then an herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, O people, nations, and languages,”
A king needs scribes. Scribes wrote as the king dictated. The scribe was held accountable for the accuracy of what was written. Most times, the king would dictate a passage and the scribe would need to read it back to the king so he could judge its content. 2Peter 1:21 “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”
Musicians mostly sang the Psalms or a ballad of recent events. It was to encourage, enlighten, and add a certain joy to the life of those assembled around the king. Psalms 95:2 “Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.”
The king had need of potters, those that craft the clay into useful objects. Notice that potters are low on the list, yet they are still needed in building what the king wanted. 2Timothy 2:20 “But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.” At another time I’ll write about the difference between the vessels of honour and the vessels of dishonour, but understand, the king needed both.
Last on my short list is servants. Servants were those who accomplished the work of the kingdom. They were not honored for their position. They simply served without recognition for their work. In the king;’s household it was obvious when the servants were bad ones. The work was shoddy or completely undone. Those servants were soon found out and replaced with good servants. Matthew 25:23 “His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.”
Of all the positions I have written about, the servant is the most poerferred in my way of thinking. Just doing the little things that are notice, yet not noticed. Those who make all the others comfortable by their work. They are not noticed unless that are doing poor work, yet when the king returns they will be rewarded for their service.
All these positions I have spoken of the king (our God) needs for His plan to succeed. All this is applicable to the church today. It needs soldiers, watchmen, heralds, scribes, musicians, potters and servant for His kingdom to be great. Serve, not for recognition, but for your later reward.
