VIAN HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
Vian tuned up for this week’s district tournament by edging Panama 2-1 at home Monday.
Last week the Wolverines defeated Colcord and Will Rogers in their first two games of the Checotah Tournament, which they won on Saturday (see separate story).
Vian 2, Panama 1
Diego Ramos registered one of only two Vian hits of the game Monday but it came at just the right time.
Ramos’ walk-off RBI in the bottom of the seventh inning put an exclamation point on a torrid defensive battle as the Wolverines stunned visiting Panama 2-1.
Destry Bethel picked up Vian’s only other hit on the day, also an RBI, as the Wolverines outlasted a persistent Razorback bid.
Bethel also picked up five strikeouts in five innings of work on the mound, scattering four Razorback hits.
After five scoreless innings, Panama took a 1-0 lead in the sixth stanza, but the Wolverines knotted the score on Bethel’s hit with a lone tally in the bottom of the inning, setting the stage for Ramos’ game-ender in the deciding inning.
The Razorbacks committed two errors on the day, while Vian was charged with a single miscue.
Vian 10, Will Rogers 0 (Checotah Tournament)
Destry Bethel recorded three hits and three RBIs to fuel a Vian steamrolling of an anemic Will Rogers effort Friday afternoon as the Wolverines chalked up a 10-0 win over the Ropers in a Checotah Tournament semifinal game.
Diego Ramos paced the Wolverines with four RBIs and Michael Polecat and Connor Collins each registered two hits on the day.
Kaden Fulbright went the distance for Vian on the mound, and picked up a pair of strikeouts.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 2-0 edge in the first inning, then broke the game wide open with six more tallies in the second stanza. Two final runs in the fourth frame capped Vian’s whitewash.
Vian recorded 13 hits for the game, while Will Rogers was limited to three. The Ropers committed two errors, and Vian has a lone miscue.
Vian 16, Colcord 0 (Checotah Tournament)
The Wolverines made it look easy Thursday, stinging the Hornets for 11 hits in a 16-0 rout of Colcord in their Checotah Tournament opener.
Cash Collins paced Vian’s effort with three hits and four RBIs while Connor Collins added two hits along with three RBIs. Michael Polecat also collected three RBIs for the Wolverines.
Pitchers Riley Ellis and Gabe Gilbert combined to record the no-hit shutout and Ellis fanned five Hornets from the mound.
Vian erupted for five runs in the first inning then added another six in the second stanza for an 11-0 cushion. Three more runs in the third inning and two final tallies in the fourth frame for the blowout win.
Colcord committed two errors on the day while Vian had a single miscue.
