The Earth Separated
By Pastor Michael Martin,

Vian Baptist Church 1Chronicles 1:19 “And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg; because in his days the earth was divided: and his brother’s name was Joktan.”

Scientists for many years have made a big deal about Continental Shift as if it was a new discovery. They attribute it to millions and millions of years ago, back in the dark ages of time when man was trying to become intelligent enough to take care of himself.

Live Science has an article about its theory: “Continental drift was a revolutionary theory explaining that continents shift position on Earth’s surface. The theory was proposed by geophysicist and meteorologist Alfred Wegener in 1912, but was rejected by mainstream science at the time. Scientists confirmed some of Wegener’s ideas decades later, which are now part of the widely accepted theory of plate tectonics.”

Why did it take so long to understand it? God’s word wrote about it 450 BC. Look at the text again. “the name of the one was Peleg; because in his days the earth was divided:” and just for fun guess what Peleg means…earthquake!

It must have been a beauty of an earthquake to have children named after the event. It must have shaken man to his very soul to see this land receding into the sunset. Many have told me I have too good of an imagination, so what you hear me tell you is all conjecture based on a Biblical fact. I wasn’t there.

Old Wegener had the right idea, yet it was years past what the Bible already described. It is a whole lot like man believing the earth was flat for all those years, yet in Isaiah it talks about God sitting on the circle of the earth (Isaiah 40:22). Just think of all those red faced ‘self proclaimed’ scientists yelling at each other about whether the world was flat or not as late as the 6 Century BC.

“It has actually been known that the Earth was round since the time of the ancient Greeks. I believe that it was Pythagoras who first proposed that the Earth was round sometime around 500 B.C. As I recall, he based his idea on the fact that he showed the Moon must be round by observing the shape of the terminator (the line between the part of the Moon in light and the part of the Moon in the dark) as it moved through its orbital cycle. Pythagoras reasoned that if the Moon was round, then the Earth must be round as well. After that, sometime between 500 B.C. and 430 B.C., a fellow called Anaxagoras determined the true cause of solar and lunar eclipses – and then the shape of the Earth’s shadow on the Moon during a lunar eclipse was also used as evidence that the Earth was round.

Around 350 BC, the great Aristotle declared that the Earth was a sphere (based on observations he made about which constellations you could see in the sky as you travelled further and further away from the equator) and during the next hundred years or so, Aristarchus and Eratosthenes actually measured the size of the Earth!” (copied from the Star Child site off the Internet) “Columbus’s crew was afraid of the unknown seas. They believed monsters were in the waters. Some thought the world was flat and that their ships were sailing too far from the shore and would fall off the end of the earth. On September 1, 1492 Columbus’s ships passed an active volcano on the island of Tenerife.” (bookunitsteacher.com) Remember that it is a long time between Aristotle and Columbus, yet his men were still fearful of ‘fall off the end of the earth’.

How many other things are described in the Bible and ignored by man? I have a sermon of 15 different scientific facts that are spoken of in the Bible that covers everything from atoms to the light we enjoy every day. It seems that “scientists” are more prone to try to prove the Bible is wrong than to prove it is right. These learned men are much too smart to believe that the Word of God is true, you see, they have never seen God face to face to prove His existence. They reject Faith in God. They reject Salvation through Jesus Christ. They think themselves too smart to believe this old ancient Bible as truth for man to learn from. One of these days I’ll publish the 15 things that are evident in Scripture that “scientists’ have just discovered in the last few centuries. But not today.

Do you think I am being too hard of these learned men? Paul warned Timothy about them back a few thousand years ago.

1Timothy 6:20 “O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:” I’ll pass that same warning on to you. 1John 4:1 “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”

In other words, don’t believe everything you hear. Find a church where the truth is taught and sit under a Godly Pastor. Allow him to teach you the Truth from the Word of God. You will never be sorry.
