OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma State Cowgirls went 1-2 in the 2023 College World Series, which is taking place at Hall of Fame Stadium.
The Cowgirls runruled the 15th-ranked Utah Utes 8-0 on Friday night just 24 hours after falling to No. 3-seeded Florida State 8-0 Thursday night to stave off elimination.
However, the Cowgirls’ season ended with a 3-1 loss Sunday night to fourth-ranked Tennessee to finish the year at 47-16.
Thursday’s game was originally scheduled for 6 p.m., but the contest was delayed due to inclement weather. Game 3 of Day 1 from the NCAA Women’s College World Series officially got underway at 7:14 p.m.
Two-time All-American Kelly Maxwell got the nod in the circle and pitched two innings, tallying three strikeouts in the process.
The Seminoles grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the first inning following a two-run blast form Michaela Edenfield.
With one out in the third, inclement weather returned to the OKC area and the game was put on pause once again.
After another weather delay of 1:46, the Cowgirls and Seminoles returned to the field at USA Softball Hall of Fame Complex at 9:55 p.m.
Coming out of the delay, Kyra Aycock entered the circle in the third for the Pokes, pitching 3.2 innings of relief.
With her fourth-inning single, Katelynn Carwile extended her on-base streak to 21 games, the longest of the season for the Cowgirls’ rightfielder.
Florida State added a run in the third inning and posted four runs in the fourth to extend its advantage to 7-0. The Seminoles scored the game winner in the sixth inning to claim the run-rule victory.
In OSU’s Friday night win over Utah, a sixrun second inning led the Cowgirls to an 8-0 run-rule victory, which was the largest run-rule victory in school history and marked the first time the Cowgirls recorded a run-rule win at the WCWS.
All-American Lexi Kilfoyl improved to 16-5 in five innings of work against the Utes as she collected three punchouts and recorded her fourth shutout of the season, a career high.
Carwile came through with a two-RBI single as she notched her 39th and 40th runs batted in of the season, good for a new singleseason career high, for a 2-0 OSU lead in the opening inning.
With the bases loaded in the second inning, Chyenne Factor tacked on OSU’s third run with an RBI single to left field. In the next at-bat, Kiley Naomi drove in another with an RBI base-hit, growing the lead to 4-0.
Following a wild pitch that scored Becker, Wynne extended the lead to 7-0 with a two-RBI double to left center. Carwile rounded out the scoring for the contest with an RBI single, OSU’s eighth and final run of the game.
In Sunday night’s season-ending loss to Tennessee, the Lady Volunteers broke a scoreless tie with a two-run third inning and a single run in the fifth inning for a 3-1 lead.
Morgyn Wynne put the Pokes on the board with a towering solo shot, her 11th home run of the season.
