NORMAN — University of Oklahoma student-athletes extended their streak of classroom success by posting a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average during the spring 2023 semester, breaking the previous record mark of 3.2 earned in spring 2022 and matched in fall 2022, the OU Athletics Department announced Monday. The 3.25 GPA also resulted in a school-record 23rd consecutive semester of surpassing a 3.0 cumulative figure.
OU’s streak of student- athletes posting at least a 3.0 GPA began in spring 2012. The 3.25 cumulative spring GPA reflects the overall academic performance of those student-athletes from their first semester of collegiate enrollment through the completion of the spring 2023 term.
OU saw 17 of its 19 athletics teams post better than a 3.0 cumulative GPA and four programs produced their highest cumulative GPAs — football, rowing, soccer and softball.
“The commitment with which our student- athletes pursue excellence in the classroom, just as much as in their field of play, never ceases to amaze me,” OU Vice President and Athletics Director Joe Castiglione said. “This year’s record of a cumulative 3.25 GPA shatters the previous, proving that Sooner athletes can achieve new heights again and again. Our studentathletes are easy to celebrate, and this instance is no different. I’m extraordinarily proud of their efforts and dedication to their own holistic development, and am thankful to our talented faculty, academic advisors, and coaches who relentlessly support our studentathletes and their quest to excel in all things.”
Here are some additional spring semester academic accomplishments of OU studentathletes: • Of the 524 studentathletes included in the latest grade report, 398 (76 percent) earned a 3.0 or higher GPA during the spring 2023 semester.
• A departmentrecord 115 studentathletes (22 percent) registered a perfect 4.0 GPA during the spring 2023 semester.
• OU student-athletes have collectively earned a cumulative GPA of 3.1 or higher in 10 of the last 11 semesters.
