Kathy Needham Walker will be the guest speaker at the 2 p.m. Sunday, August 20, meeting of the Sequoyah County Historical Society. The museum is located at 200 East Creek in Sallisaw. She will talk about the history of Paw Paw.
Paw Paw was a thriving farm community in the south east bottoms of Sequoyah County until 1943 when a devastating flood destroyed most of it.
Kathy, now in her 60’s, was a daughter of a sharecropper who describes herself as a fledgling novelist, a novice painter and an advocate for the learning, and retaining of the history of the Paw Paw community.
In the 1980s, she and 10 friends would gather to preserve the memory of the area. They would camp out near an old abandoned church for three or four days at a time. Six of the 10 are now deceased but Kathy lives on to tell the history of Paw Paw.
A reception will follow the meeting, hosted by Mike and Sharn Huff, and it will provide a time for everyone to meet and talk with Kathy.
The public is invited to attend.
