The Gore Lady Pirates went 1-3 in last weekend’s Okmulgee Tournament, beating Catoosa 14-9 but losing 10-1 to Preston, 14-1 to Checotah and 7-2 to Warner.
The Lady Pirates had their home opener on Aug. 15 spoiled by the visiting Gans Lady Grizzlies, who left town with a 23-12, four-inning, run-rule victory.
The first day of last week saw the Lady Pirates win their first game of the season, beating Arkoma 6-5 in six innings in their first of two games in Roland — which blanked Gore 10-0 in the final game of the Aug. 14 three-way.
In the win over Arkoma, after the Lady Mustangs tied the game in the fifth inning at 4-all and took a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning — which was played under the international tiebreaker rule by putting the runner who made the last out in the fifth inning at second base — the Lady Pirates (2-9) scored twice in their half on an Arkoma error.
The Lady Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning on an RBI groundout by Cadi Shoemake for a 1-0 lead.
The advantage bloomed to 3-0 in the second inning on an RBI single by Sophie O’Connor and an RBI groundout by Kennedy Williams.
After the Lady Mustangs tied the game at 3-all in the third inning, Arkoma took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth and final inning of regulation, Gore knotted the game at 4-all to force extra innings on Cadi Shoemake’s RBI groundout.
For the game, Paige Curran was 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, Kynley Webb was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored and River Shoemake tripled for Gore.
Cheyenne Davidson got the win in relief, pitching the final 2.2 innings with three strikeouts. Kendra Huckbay started and went the first 2.1 innings with three Ks.
In the home loss to Gans, the Lady Pirates never led, falling behind 8-0 in the second inning, then trailing 23-6 in the fourth inning.
The Lady Pirates almost erased the run-rule status with a six-run fourth inning — highlighted by O’Connor’s two-run, inside-the-park home run — but it didn’t produce the necessary runs to keep the game going into the fifth inning.
In defeat, Huckbay was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, O’Connor was 2-for-3 with a two-run, inside-the-park homer and four RBIs, Curran doubled with two RBIs and two runs scored and River Shoemake doubled and scored twice.
Davidson took the loss, going the first three innings with five strikeouts. Huckbay went the final inning with a strikeout.
In the win over Catoosa in the Okmulgee Tournament, the Lady Pirates never trailed, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, which became a 9-1 advantage in the second inning. After the Lady Indians cut their deficit to 9-7 in their half of the second inning, the Lady Pirates put away the game with a five-run third inning for a 14-7 lead.
For the game, Webb was 2-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored, Huckbay doubled and scored twice, River Shoemake doubled with three RBIs and a run scored and Emily Daily doubled, scored twice and had an RBI.
Huckbay got her first win of the season, going the first 1.2 innings with two strikeouts. Cadi Shoemake got her first save of the season, going the final 1.1 innings.
In the loss to Preston in the tournament, Preston scored once in the first inning and nine runs in the second inning for a 10-0 lead.
Gore’s only run scored in the third inning on Daily’s RBI triple, scoring O’Connor.
In defeat, Daily was 2-for-2 with an RBI triple, while O’Connor singled and scored her team’s lone run.
Cadi Shoemake took the loss, going the first 1.2 innings with a strikeout. River Shoemake got the final out of the game.
In the loss to Checotah, the Lady Wildcats put away the game early with a four-run first inning and a 10-run second inning.
Gore’s lone run scored on a Checotah error, allowing Cadi Shoemake to score.
For the game, Cadi Shoemake and Daily each singled for Gore’s hits.
In the tournament setback to Warner, the Lady Pirates grabbed a 1-0 lead on a first-inning sacrifice fly by Webb, scoring Daily.
However, the Eagles flew high with a two-run first inning and a fiverun second inning to take the lead for good at 7-1.
Gore’s last run scored Daily’s RBI infield single, scoring Curran, in the fourth inning.
For the game, Daily was 3-for-3 with a triple and a run scored, while O’Connor and Davidson each singled for Gore.
