Vian Lady Wolverines sweep Okmulgee, beat Morris last week
By David Seeley Sports Editor,

The Vian Lady Wolverines went 3-0 last week, all home wins at Armstrong Park. The Lady Wolverines opened the week with a Aug. 29 doubleheader home sweep of the Okmulgee Lady Bulldogs by identical scores of 100, then ended the week beating the Morris Lady Eagles 6-2 on Thursday afternoon.

In the opener against Okmulgee, Vian ace Kala Gibbins (11-4) struck out 10 batters in five innings and threw a three-hitter.

The Lady Wolverines (13-5) broke a scoreless tie with a sevenrun fourth inning and a three-run fifth inning to put the game into runrule status.

For the game, Gibbins was 2-for-3 with a double, a run batted in and a run scored, Hanna Mattingly was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored, Halli Russell was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Akeelah Truett doubled with two runs scored and an RBI, LaKaila Drew doubled and scored once and Skyelar Locust doubled and scored twice for Vian.

In the nightcap, Gibbins threw a no-hitter with five Ks in four innings.

Being the visiting team, the Lady Wolverines got to bat first, and wasted no time denting the scoreboard as they scored four runs in each of the first two innings, then added two more runs in the fourth inning to put the game into run-rule status.

For the game, Mattingly was 3-for-3 with two doubles, three runs scored and an RBI, Drew was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and Maisie Wells doubled with an RBI and a run scored.

In Vian’s home win over Morris, the Lady Wolverines scored a run in the first inning, two runs in the third and fifth innings and a run in the sixth inning for a 6-0 lead after six innings.

Gibbins got the win, striking out five batters in seven innings and scattering five hits.

For the game, Truett went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored, Maisie Wells was 2-for-4 with a run scored, Mattingly was 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and a run scored and Drew hit a solo homer for Vian.

Vian’s home game with Wagoner on Aug. 28 got canceled because the Lady Bulldogs had to make up a district game that day, and Vian coach John Mays said the game likely won’t be rescheduled.
