The Gore Pirates did something they did a season ago — begin the Class A playoffs with a home victory.
The Pirates got past the Fairland Owls 22-14 Friday night at K.G. Horn Stadium in a Class A opening-round playoff game. The Pirates (9-2) will travel to meet the Stroud Tigers at 7 p.m. next Friday in a Class A secondround game. The Tigers (9-2) routed Morrison 56-12 at home Friday night in their playoff opener.
The Owls end the season at 5-6. The Pirates for two first-quarter touchdowns. One was an 8-yard TD run by Bladin McCartney with 10:14 left in the period, followed by an 11yard TD run by Tate Brooksher with 6:30 remaining in the period. Hunter McGee ran in the two-point conversion after McCartney’s score, then caught a two-point conversion pass from Brooksher after Brooksher’s score.
Gore’s final TD came with 8:25 left in the first half as McCartney scored his second touchdown of the game on a 20-yard.
For the game, McCartney rushed for 127 yards and two TDs. McGee caught five passes for 121 yards, while Brooksher threw for 142 yards.
Defensively, Ayden Cox led the way with seven tackles, one solo, with a quarterback sack and a pass break-up, Journey Shells had six tackles, four solo and an interception and McGee had five tackles, four solo, with two pass break-ups and two INTs.
