It only seemed fitting that Vian Lady Wolverines senior infielder LaKaila Drew signed a college letter of intent with Connors State College, which she did in a signing ceremony Thursday at B.J. Traw Gymnasium.
“I’ve had history there,” Drew said. “My aunts and other (family) people have gone there before. They (Cowgirls and coaches) all kind of knew me.”
“I’m very excited,” Vian softball coach John Mays said. “She’s a fouryear starter, and she’s always worked hard. She never complains. She plays any position. I’m very excited for her. She’s consistently gotten better every year. It’s a good deal for her. She’ll be close, so we can all go watch her. That’s a big thing.”
Getting to play at the next level will fulfill a lifelong aspiration.
“I’m really excited,” Drew said. “It’s been my dream. I’m excited to be able to carry it (family tradition with Connors State College) on.”
“She can be just as productive because she can play any infield position,” Mays said. “She can pitch, and she can play outfield. She can play all positions. I think she can help them out a lot.”
Drew knows whether she will be able to make an immediate impact with the Cowgirls, she knows it won’t come easy.
“I’ll definitely have to work hard for it,” she said. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity. I’m very excited.”
“The way she’s grown these last four years, just being around her during slow-pitch (softball) and fast-pitch, it’s going to be one of those deals where she’s ready,” Mays said. “She’s such a good kid. I’ve gotten to know her pretty well. She’s put herself in a pretty good position. It’s bittersweet (to see her leave Vian’s softball program).”
