The Vian Wolverines went 15-10 a season ago and made it to the Class 3A Area Tournament in Ada.
This year, the Wolverines are seeking more wins as well as seeing that postseason run end at the Class 3A State Tournament.
The Wolverines return five starters from a season ago — senior guard Yonsi Grass (14.1 points and 3.2 rebounds per game last season), junior guard Jacob Brannick (4.5, 2.5), sophomore guard Maysn Wright (14, 6.5), sophomore forward Tace Sanders (four, 3.2) and sophomore guard Brayden Rodriguez.
The key players back from last year who saw playing time in 2022-23 are Draighton Fletcher, Dante Glass and Ethan Pollock. Rounding out the roster are Marcus Armstrong, Ethan Bullock, Cash Collins, Braxton Drake, Caden Gilbert, Gabreil Gilbert, Kyle King and Austin Wilson.
“We lost three seniors from last year, but we bring back two starters and five others who played a lot last year,” fourth-year coach John Mays said. “We will get a lot better as the season goes along. We will compete. I like our make-up as a team.”
Mays said his team’s strength is youth and speed.
“We have a young core that is fast and can get up and down the court,” he said.
However, numbers could play a factor as well.
“We have to develop depth,” Mays said.
