VAN BUREN, Ark. — The Gore Pirates wrestling team got the season off and running Thursday night as they competed against the host Van Buren Pointers and Fort SmitH (Ark.) Northside.
Heavyweight Kaydin McCartney went 2-0 as he beat his Northside opponent by pinfall and edged the Van Buren foe by a single point.
Two other wrestlers went 1-1 on the night. At 157 pounds, Devon Mannon pinned his Northside opponent but suffered a pinfall loss to his Van Buren foe.
Bladin McCartney also went 1-1 in opening night as he pinned his Northside opponent but lost by a point to his Van Buren foe.
Antonio Parker, wrestling at 215 pounds, lost both of his matches by pinfall.
Shelby Raines, another heavyweight, only wrestled an exhibition match in which he lost by fall to a Northside opponent.
“All in all, we wrestled really well,” Gore wrestling coach Matt Hawkins said. “We have a lot to look forward to this season.”
The next action for the Gore wrestling quintet will be their home opener against Stilwell and Heavener at 5 p.m. Monday at Gore Event Center.
