The True Light
commentary
December 13, 2023
The True Light
By Pastor Michael Martin,

John 1:9 “That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.”

Our text starts with the fact that every man has light enough to understand God, from his birth. That light is roughly called by science our conscience, the basic understanding of good and evil. I have read about some men who seem to be born without a conscience, but they are rare. Clinical observations at ASH have suggested 4 possible subtypes of psychopathy: narcissistic, borderline, sadistic, and antisocial. Issues related to the conceptualization of psychopathy are addressed, recognizing that additional data are needed to understand the observed variations in cases of psychopathy.

This all happens when we decide to ignore the light we have been born with. It is described in detail in the book of Romans Chapter 1. Romans 1:21-22 “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,” Ephesians 4:18-19 “Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.”

Lasciviousness is indulgence of animal desires. Now let me define what a pschopathic personality is like.

Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental health condition in which people have an unreasonably high sense of their own importance.

Borderline behavior is a personality disorder characterized by severe mood swings, impulsive behavior, and difficulty forming stable personal relationships.

Sadistic behavior is someone who enjoys inflicting pain on others, sometimes in a sexual sense. Sadists like seeing other people hurt. A sadist is the opposite of a masochist, who enjoys being in pain themselves.

Antisocial behavior is a personality disorder characterized by persistent disregard of the rights of other people, failure to comply with laws and social customs, and irresponsible and reckless behavior.

All this is because man, who was given light at birth, chose to ignore that light and his understanding was darkened. He now feels free to do whatever he wants with his life and it is manifested in the ways described as being a psychopath today.

Some today ignore all the basic rules of social living. They do not care to bother trying to get along with their neighbor. God tells us to “Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, (Matthew 19:19), but when light is ignored they think they can make up their own rules.

Some today have difficulty forming a bond with anyone because of their impulsive behavior or odd thoughts about the nature of things. In Christ we are one individual in a very large family. We belong, not because of what we are, but because of what Jesus is to us. He provided light to every man that came into the world. When man ignored that light, He came to earth and lived a victorious life over sin. After he proved that a human can overcome sin, He died a vicarious death for us. The Bible clearly tells us that the “wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23) so someone had to die to pay for those sins. Jesus did that for us. He, through His power as the Son of God, rose from the dead. In so doing He provided us a path past the death we should endure and allows us to have eternal life. Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

The gift of God is eternal life, we bypass the eternal death of the damned, but here is something to think about. Romans 1:18-19 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.”

If man stops to ponder what is truth and what is a lie, he will see, God helping him, that the light he was born with is truth. And this is where the hard part lies.

2 Corinthians 4:3-4 “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”

Psychopaths laugh at the laws of God, even laughing at God Himself. The light they were born with and the conscience they struggle against has made them into the vile version of what human kind was designed as. We were not designed for self-pleasure. We were designed for Gods pleasure. Colossians 1:16 “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:” Did you catch that last bit…we were created by him and for him? The god of this world hates anything that God loves and God loves you. You are the target of the devil’s wrath against those designed and made for God. The devils power is immense to corrupt, destroy and produce wicked people. Only Christ can save us and all we need to do is believe in Him.

Romans 10:9-10 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

Romans 10:13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

You, my friend, are a whosoever. Find Jesus, call upon His name and ask for His free salvation.
