The Vian high school and junior high wrestlers opened their home season against the Poteau junior varsity squads on Dec. 12 at B.J. Traw Gymnasium to celebrate homecoming.
While both Poteau JV teams officially won both high school duals — 15-6 in the girls and 37-36 in the boys, with the latter team score being decided by criteria to break a 36-all deadlock at dual’s end — several Vian wrestlers picked up individual wins.
The lone Lady Wolverine high school wrestler to get a win was Carissa Prock at 130 pounds, pinning Poteau JV’s Ava Hamilton in 2:50. Vian’s other Lady Wolverine who saw action was Aubrey Gant at 115, who lost 5-2 to Poteau JV’s Jaydn Harper.
In the high school boys’ action, four matches were contested, with Vian winning three of them.
The wrestling night ended on a down note as during Clay Clark’s heavyweight match against Poteau JV’s Brady Wahl, Clark took down Wahl, but in the process the Pirate matman suffered a broken lower right leg — which gave Clark the six-point injury-default win, with Clark leading at the time 2-0. Wahl was assisted to the ambulance by Pafford Emergency Medical Services staff and transported to Mercy Hospital Fort Smith (Ark.). Whale underwent surgery last Wednesday morning.
Vian’s other high school boys victors were Adoff Stahl at 126 with a pinfall win over Walker Bryan in 3:31, while Gunnar Richey followed that with a pinfall victory of his own as he pinned Zaden Faulkner in 52 seconds.
In the junior high girls action, the lone contested match saw Vian’s Maddi Turman pin Yanelli Guzman in 34 seconds. On criteria, the Lady Wolverines won the JH dual 13-12.
The most contested matches of the night took place in the JH boys dual, which was won 3930 by the Poteau JV.

Four exhibition matches took place on the night. In the junior high girls, Turman lost by pinfall to Gabriela Ortiz, while Kye Brown suffered a loss by pin to Denise Chun.
In the JH boys, both Madsen (35 seconds) and Charles Lucas (43 seconds) won their exhibition matches by pinfall.
The Vian wrestlers then celebrated Senior Night against the Sequoyah- Tahlequah Indians at B.J., Traw Gymnasium.
In the high school portion of Senior Night’s dual, Lane Jameson and Garritt Hunt got pins for the Wolverines, while Gant, Prock and Carmen Rautenburg all won matches by forfeit for the Lady Wolverines. On the JH side of Senior Night’s action, Andrade, Lucas and Gavin Cornelius won matches by pin for the Wolverines, while Turman got a major decision in the lone match contested for the Lady Wolverines.
The Vian wrestlers will be idle until after the Christmas break when they will participate in the Inola Tournament, which takes place Jan. 5-6.
