Stanley Tubbs Memorial Library in partnership with the Oklahoma Healthy Aging Initiative (OHAI) will present two free senior fitness programs beginning January 29 – April 17. Tai Cni for Better Balance and SAIL (Stay Active and Independent for Life) are geared toward improving balance, strength and fitness in seniors. The programs are funded by a health literacy grant from the Oklahoma Department of Libraries with federal funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Tai Chi for Better Balance will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 2 – 3 p.m. for 12 weeks at the Indian Capital Technology Center, Building B on 401 E Houser Blvd. This class consists of a series of slow continuous movements that improve balance and flexibility. It reduces the risk of falls and improves the overall mind, body and spirit.
SAIL will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 0 – 1 1 a.m. for 12 weeks at the Civicthe Wheeler Event Center on 103 N. Wheeler Ave. This class consists of a warm up, cardio, balance, strength and cool down. It also reduces the risk of falls and improves overall fitness.
Julie Klineline will facilitate both classes. She has been sharing these classes for two years after receiving certification from OHAI. “The response to these two classes has been great. Everyone not only feels accomplished for improving their physical fitness, they enjoy the social aspect of meeting with friends weekly. It doesn’t matter where you start, everyone of all physical abilities can do these classes. Chairs are available to use during the classes,” according to Klineline.
