Gore squads get homecoming split with Dewar after sweeping Gans; both teams fall at Panama

The Gore High School basketball teams split their Friday night homecoming games with Dewar at Gore Event Center as the Pirates won 44-39, but the Lady Pirates fell 59-39.

The week started off well as both Gore teams swept county rival Gans in home games Jan. 23 at Gore Event Center as the Pirates beat the Grizzlies 44-34 and the Lady Pirates edged the Lady Grizzlies 26-25.

On Saturday night, both Gore squads suffered road losses against Panama at Panama High School’s Razorback Event Center. The Razorbacks rallied to down the Pirates 62-56 after the Lady ’Backs defeated the Lady Pirates 64-23.

In the boys’ Friday night homecoming win over Dewar, the Pirates (12-8) virtually led wire to wire.

For the game, Cain Cooper scored a gamehigh 15 points and Journey Shells added 12 points to lead Gore, followed by Burr Jaymes with seven points, Tate Brooksher with six points and Bryon McDuffie with four points.

In the girls’ Friday night homecoming loss to Dewar, the Lady Dragons led 18-8 after a period and never lost their lead.

In defeat, Natalie Casteel shared gamehigh honors with Dewar’s Laynie Taylor with 17 points and River Shoemake added 11 points to lead the Lady Pirates (4-15), followed by Rayleigh Moore with six points, Kaitlyn Byrne with three points and Emily Daily with two points.

In the Gore boys’ win over Gans, the Pirates trailed 12-7 after a quarter, but outscored the Grizzlies 37-22 the rest of the way to complete the comeback.

For the game, Gore had a trio of players hit for double figures, led by Shells with a gamehigh 16 points, followed by Cooper with 13 points and Jaymes with 10 points. McDuffie had seven points, while Brooksher added three points.

In the Gore girls’ victory over Gans, the Lady Pirates trailed 8-2 after a quarter, but outscored Gans 24-17 over the final three quarters to get the come-from-behind win.

For the game, Byrne led Gore with a gamehigh 11 points, followed by Casteel with four points, Shoemake with three points and Daily, Oaklei Thornton, Ricki Huckbay and Paige Curran with two points apiece.

In the Gore boys’ loss at Panama, the Pirates tied the game at 49-all on Cooper’s basket with 5:20 left to play, but the Hogs outscored them 13-7 the rest of the way.

In defeat, Cooper scored a game-high 23 points to lead Gore, followed by Shells with 13 points, Jaynes with 12 points, Brooksher with six points and McDuffie with two points.

In the Gore girls’ loss at Panama, the Lady Razorbacks jumped out to a 22-8 lead after a period and were never headed.

In defeat, Byrne led Gore with seven points, followed by Casteel with five points, Shoemake with four points, Keira Rowe and Lily Wooten with two points each and Thornton, Moore and Huckbay with a free throw apiece.
