It was not a happy homecoming for the Vian High School basketball teams as they each lost to Oktaha on Friday night at B.J. Traw Gymnasium as the Wolverines lost 60-44 and the Lady Wolverines fell 67-35.

Last week started with a pair of road losses Jan. 23 against county rival Central as the Tigers outlasted the Wolverines 93-89 in triple overtime, then the Lady Tigers completed the sweep with a 60-23 win over the Lady Wolverines.

On Thursday night, the lone basketball win for Vian came compliments of the Wolverines, who defeated the host Howe Lions 62-43 after the Lady Lions tamed the Lady Wolverines 71-28.

In the Vian boys’ homecoming loss to Oktaha, the Tigers jumped out to a 17-8 lead after a quarter and never relinquished their advantage.

In defeat, Masyn Wright scored 11 points and homecoming king Yonsi Grass added 10 points to lead the Wol-verines (6-10), followed by Donte Glass with nine points, Trace Sanders with six points, Joe O’Neil with four points and Jacob Brannick and Ethan Pollock with two points apiece.

In the VIan girls’ homecoming loss to Oktaka, the Lady Tigers led 16-10 after a period and 31-24 at halftime, but they outscored the Lady Wolverines 36-11 in the second half.

In defeat, Halli Russell scored 11 points and Avery Wright added 10 points to lead the Lady Wolverines (1-14), followed by Maisie Wells with six points, Kala Gibbins with four points and Rebel Simon and Annie Neal with two points apiece.

In the Vian boys’ loss to Central, the Tigers, who trailed 49-46 after three quarters, outscored the Wolverines in the final period 16-13 to force overtime with the game tied at 62-all.

After nothing was decided in the first two OTs, it took the third overtime to do it as Central outscored Vian by four points to complete the come-from-behind win.

In defeat, Grass scored 23 points and Wright added 20 points to lead Vian, followed by O’Neil with 19 points, Brayden Rodriguez with 11 points, Brannick with nine points, Sanders with six points and Cash Collins with a free throw.

In the Vian girls’ loss to Central, the Lady Tigers jumped out to a 15-5 lead after a quarter, which became a 37-14 halftime advantage and a 52-14 lead after three quarters thanks to a 15-0 third quarter by Central.

In defeat, Wright led Vian with five points, followed by Gibbins and Cassidee Postoak with three points each and Neal, Russell, Skyelar Locust, Kiah Richardson, Aliyah Tucker and Rayleigh Terrill with two points apiece.
