Vian teams suffer home losses to Central, Westville, split with Oktaha

It was a rough week of basketball last week for the Vian High School teams. They opened last week by suffering a pair of home losses for the second time in a week period to the Central squads on Jan. 30 The Lady Tigers began the night with a 5831 win over the Lady Wolverines, then the Tigers completed the Central sweep of Vian for the second time in a week with a 58-50 victory over the Wolverines. The Central teams celebrated homecoming Jab. 23 with a pair of home wins over Vian.

The Vian teams suffered a pair of home losses to Westville on Friday night at B.J. Traw Gymnasium as the Lady Wolverines suffered a 40-37 overtime loss to the Lady Yellowjackets, then the ’Jackets stung the Wolverines 53-48.

The only basketball win of last week came Thursday night when the Wolverines got a 6855 road victory over the Oktaha Tigers. The Lady Tigers opened Thursday night’s action in Oktaha with a 64-34 win over the Lady Wolverines.

In the girls’ loss to Central, the Lady Tigers jumped out to a 10-2 lead after a quarter, which became a 22-14 halftime advantage and a 41-20 lead going into the final period.

In defeat, Halli Russell led the Lady Wolverines (1-17) with 12 points, followed by Kala Gibbins with five points, Annie Neal with four points and Skyelar Locust, Avery Wright, Shelbie Glass, LaKaila Drew and Cassidee Postoak with two points apiece.

In the boys’ loss to Central, it didn’t take three overtimes to decide it as on Jan. 23 — four quarters were enough this time.

The Tigers broke a 12-all tie after a period with a 16-14 second quarter for a 28-26 halftime lead. A 20-10 third period for Central upped its advantage to 48-36 entering the fourth quarter.

In defeat, Yonsi Grass led the Wolverines (712) with 21 points, followed by Masyn Wright with 11 points, Jacob Brannick with nine points, Trace Sanders with four points, Dante Glass and Cash Collins with two points each and Ethan Pollock with a free throw.

In the boys’ win over Oktaha, the Wolverines trailed 15-11 after a period, but they outscored the Tigers 18-14 in the second quarter to knot the game at 29-all at halftime. In the second half, Vian outscored Oktaha 39-26 to complete the come-from-behind victory.

For the game, Grass scored a game-high 31 points to lead Vian, followed by Wright and Joe O’Neil with 14 points each, Collins with four points, Brannick with three points and Sanders with two points.

In the girls’ loss to Oktaha, the Lady Tigers doubled the Lady Wolverines 18-9 in the first quarter en route to a 3113 halftime lead and a 47-22 advantage going into the final period.

In defeat, Gibbins and Russell each scored seven points to lead the Lady Wolverines (1-17), followed by Glass with six points, Kiah Richardson with five points, Rebel Simon, Maisie Wells, Kalli Kennedy and Avery Wright with two points each and Jaden Frazier with a free throw.

In the boys’ loss to Westville, the Wolverines, who trailed 13-9 after a period, outscored the Yellowjackets 17-10 in the second quarter to take a 26-23 halftime lead. However, the ‘Jackets outscored the Wolverines 30-22 in the second half to earn the come-from-behind win.

In defeat, Grass led Vian with a game-high 22 points, followed by Sanders with 15 points, Wright with six points and O’Neil with four points.

In the girls’ loss to Westville, the Lady Yellowjackets had a 12-8 lead after a quarter, a 17–11 halftime advantage and a 27-25 lead going into the final period, but the Lady Wolverines used an 8-6 fourth quarter to knot the game at 33-all to force overtime. However, in OT, the Lady ’jackets stung the Lady Wolverines 7-4 to get the win.

In defeat, Wright scored 10 points to lead Vian, followed by Wells and Locust with nine points each, Russell with five points, Gibbins with three points and Simon with two points.
