The Sequoyah County Commissioners proclaimed Feb. 19-23 as Farm Bureau Week in Sequoyah County, which tied into last week’s 59th annual junior livestock show at the county fairgrounds.

Sequoyah County Farm Bureau President Gary Acker praised the tireless efforts of those who participate in the annual livestock show, which ran through Friday.

In other business before the commissioners last Monday at their weekly meeting, Heath Orabanec, fire chief for Sequoyah County Rural Fire Protection District #1, provided an update on current firefighter training efforts, the importance of maintaining high standards for training and how grant funding is vital to ensuring the continued participation by county firefighters.

The commissioners also opened bids received for 2015 or newer dump trucks. Specifications for the trucks are for them to have 400,000 miles or less, tri-axle with automatic transmission and a minimum 15-yard dump bed. The trucks are earmarked for Districts 2 and 3. The commissioners declined to award any bids until after they have reviewed the bids received. They are expected to award the bids at their Feb. 19 meeting. The commissioners also approved two separate agreements to work on private property:

• By and between Kelly Osburn, 109369 S. 4769 Road, Roland, and Sequoyah County District 1. District 1 Commissioner Ray Watts explained that the work will be focused on clearing trees along the right of way to alleviate shade on the roadway that inhibits thawing following snow and ice events.

• By and between Leah Terrill, 102168 S. 4570 Road, Vian, and Sequoyah County District 2. District 2 Commissioner Beau Burlison explained that the work will be for the construction of a bus turnaround at that property.

In addition, the commissioners approved the transfer of appropriations from Election Board Maintenance and Operations (M&O) to Election Board M&O part-time in the amount of $2,500.
