Vian Police Chief Mark Harkins said Friday morning around 5 a.m. that a Tulsa man driving a box van south on Hwy. 82 reportedly crossed the center line, striking two parked vehicles in front of The Field House, and then left the scene of the accident.
According to Harkins, around 8:30 a.m. Vian Police officers located the disabled box van on Interstate-40 near the 299 mile marker. The vehicle was being driven by Oscar Smith, who worked for a Tulsa delivery company. Smith was traveling from Tahlequah to Pocola, according to the accident report.
“After looking at the damage and interviewing the driver, it was believed to be the same vehicle and person driving,” Harkins said.
The driver was taken into custody and after being mirandized, he reportedly admitted to hitting the two vehicles and leaving the scene.
“The driver was taken to a local hospital for a blood test and then booked into the Sequoyah County Detention Center,” Harkins said.
Results of the blood test were still pending as of press time, Monday.
Smith was booked in on charges of driving under the influence, actual physical control, possession of drug paraphernalia, and leaving the scene of a property damage accident.
Harkins said a glass pipe and a straw were found inside the vehicle.
“Thanks goes out to Officer Turner for the swift action and relaying of information, the business owner who provided the video surveillance, to dispatch with the oncoming morning shifts, and both Sequoyah County deputies who assisted,” Harkins said. “Communication and great relationships are vital to the community and the departments that represent them. Thank you to everyone who assisted in helping the victims involved in this incident.”
