Time Change

Time Change
By Pastor Tim Perkins First Southern Baptist Church, Gore,

I must be getting older. Some of the things that never bothered me have suddenly started throw off my groove, upset ting me not just making me mad. I used to work in a grocery store and about every three years the company would come in and reset the store (basically move everything around). Never bothered me. But today, I just figure out where things are in Wal-Mart and the next thing I know they have moved everything around and basically have changed my whole pattern of shopping.

TV programming is another one of the things I get irritated with. I get used to my favorite shows airing at a certain time and day and then one day, out of the blue, the network has changed the time or the day it aired. OR, they change the day and the time so that when I do finally find it, I have missed two episodes and have no idea what is going on in the show.

One other thing would be my favorite path to travel because it is a short cut (to me, anyway), suddenly has a stop light or two or stop sign(s) or both! Or, I see the sign announcing this route is going to be under construction for the next six months (or year) beginning today!!!

The one change that is coming up next week that used to never bother me is Time Change. I never understood the principle behind it. We move our clock forward or backward one hour and say the day is now longer or shorter. It is still 24 hours either way, so, how do you figure it is longer or shorter? This is like taking an inch off the front of the ruler and adding it to the other end and say “There, now we have made it longer.” I am no rocket scientist but to me it is still a 12” ruler.

I get the whole idea of time change was for energy savings back in World War I and repealed shortly after the end of the war because of farm lobby groups dissatisfaction. Again in WWII, in 1942, it was implemented for the duration of the war but repealed because some places implemented it and some did not, causing massive confusion. It again was repealed. In 1966 President Johnson made it permanent and the rest is history. Another month was added to the Daylight Saving Time in 1986 making it a 7 month DSL and 5 month Standard Time. (To which the golf and baseball industry loved.) I think it’s time to make it one time or the other.

I am at the age where the change forward and backward is really messing with my internal clock and my body. I just can’t adjust to the change in a few short days like I used too. As a matter of fact, I just get used to one of the time changes and then it’s time to change back. This is quite frustrating, annoying and uncalled for.

And on top of all this is the fact that I am a Baptist. Everyone knows Baptists do not like change. The Bible says God never changes so why should we (enough said).

But, nonetheless, Saturday night is time change and I will change all my clocks before I go to bed. And that is another thing, changing the clock on the microwave requires a degree in electronics and so do my vehicles. You would think if my cell phone could change time automatically so could the clocks in the cars.

But I really should quit whining. The Bible tells me there is still a lot to change. For instance, when I die I will be changed to be like Christ (1 John 3:1-3). Paul tells the Corinthians that “we shall not all sleep, but we shall be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.” (1 Cor. 15:51-52) Then in Revelations we see the earth and heavens will be changed. Even the writer of Hebrews tells us about the earth perishing “…Like a garment they will be changed…” I guess I should get used to change. The fact that change bothers me is evidence that I have changed. My body gets out of bed every morning and returns every evening with various aches and pains that weren’t there before, my energy level diminishes more rapidly and it seems like I see my doctor a lot more are all signs of change.

I say all this (and then I am done with my rant) to say I need to accept change(s) in life. One day there will be one last change, either through death or rapture. I will say bye to this life, this earth and hello to eternal life and a new Heaven and new Earth!

Until then I am looking at the manual for the car and truck to reset the clock, the microwave…I will leave that for Jill.

An Unchanging Preacher in an Ever-changing World, Bro. Tim
