In a move set to bolster regional tourism and community engagement, Gena McPhail has assumed the role of executive director for the Greater Tenkiller Area Association (GTAA). McPhail brings a wealth of experience, having served previously as director of Tourism for Tour Tahlequah and Explore Cherokee County, positions from which she orchestrated significant advancements in local tourism initiatives.
McPhail’s tenure with Tour Tahlequah, beginning in 2018, and subsequently with Explore Cherokee County after the passage of the Cherokee County Lodging Tax in 2022, was marked by notable achievements.
She played a pivotal role in advocating for the tax, driving increased tourism figures and economic contributions throughout the region. Her departure from these roles in March 2024 set the stage for her transition to GTAA, an organization she has actively supported since 2018.
“I am honored to lead GTAA and to continue the momentum established by my predecessors, Stan Weed and Kenyatta Wright (Vian residents),” remarked McPhail. “My focus remains steadfast: promoting our entire region strategically and effectively.”
Under McPhail’s leadership, GTAA aims to bridge existing gaps between Tour Tahlequah, Explore Cherokee County, and the GTAA itself.
Her vision emphasizes comprehensive marketing efforts aimed at showcasing the area’s diverse attractions and natural resources.
“Over the past six years, we’ve witnessed continuous growth in both visitor numbers and economic impact,” McPhail noted. “This success underscores the importance of collaborative efforts with local groups and organizations.”
McPhail’s commitment to community engagement is evident in her approach, which prioritizes fostering relationships with groups integral to the region’s economic vitality.
She envisions GTAA as a unifying force, catering to diverse interests—from competitive events to leisurely retreats amidst Tenkiller’s scenic landscapes.
In her new role, McPhail pledges to expand upon the groundwork laid by her predecessors, steering GTAA towards new horizons in regional tourism and community development.
