Second Generation Christians
commentary
August 7, 2024
Second Generation Christians
By Michael Martin Oiurrh,

Judges 2:10 “And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.”

This new generation is different from the “old folks”. In days past,

especially in the developing West of our nation, a church was a church Vian and a preacher brought the Word Baptist There was not normally a

plethora of churches too chose from. When the preacher came to town everyone came to worship and hear about the LORD from the messenger sent to them.

The Methodists had circuit-riding preachers that made their rounds between several churches, sometimes being in a different church every week. Each time the “preacher” came to town, Sunday became special and people gathered to hear from God’s Word.

Today we have so many choices it is like going to a restaurant and looking at a menu card. Let me see, do I want pomp and ceremony, or do I want a stage band to worship with? Do I want someone to coddle me or do I want the truth of God’s Word? No! never the last one! It will condemn my lifestyle! It will try to change my behavior! It will challenge me to live a better life!

Proverbs 30:11-14 “There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother. There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness. There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up. There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.”

Now I believe that God gave Solomon far seeing eyes. He could predict the future. He had advanced knowledge of what was to come or he was describing his present generation. We are told that “History repeats itself” by an older wiser generation.

Mark Twain: “[A] favorite theory of mine [is] that no occurrence is sole and solitary, but is merely a repetition of a thing which has happened before, and perhaps often.”

“We learn from history that we learn nothing from history.” George Bernard Shaw “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” George Santayana Repeating the mistakes of previous generations over and over is a human characteristic which is somehow transmitted from generation to generation. How is it that mankind does not understand that when men act in a Godly manner, they prosper, the nation prospers?

Is this the generation that Solomon was talking about? Do children today curse their parents? Is this the generation that does notbelieve it is necessary to attend church because they are “doing just fine” without it? Does this generation think it is so much smarter than previous generations? Is this the generation with swords for teeth that bite, chew up and spit out anyone with a differing opinion? Do they stop their ears and scream when someone suggests they might be wrong?

I’ll leave that for you to decide. My parting admonition: Go to church! If you go expecting to learn something from God’s Word, God always supplies it even from a poor preacher. You see, he is reading from God’s Message to mankind and there is always something to learn from it if we apply ourselves to it.
