The Webbers Falls Warriors football team had its final preseason tune-up last as they scrimmaged Cave Springs and Wetumka last Thursday night at Smokey Cox Stadium.
The Warriors scored once on the night as Gunner Shelby hit Chevy Cole on a 30yard touchdown pass against Cave Springs.
Webbers Falls football coach Trent Holt said earlier in the week before last Thursday night’s scrimmage that the Warriors were going to work on their passing game.
“Against Wetumka, we ran the ball three times out of about 15 plays,” Holt said. “We were just trying to throw it. We didn’t throw it very good. That (passing game) is what we wanted to work on, and that’s what we did. We focused on throwing the ball. If we had lined up and did just what we’re going to do a lot (run the football), we probably would have scored a time or two more. I think we’re going to be able to run the ball. We’re just trying to throw it. We’re going to be able to throw it, but we just have to keep throwing to get better at it. It (Last Thursday night’s scrimmage) gave us a good base line of what we’re going to be able to do.”
Holt was pleased with his team’s defensive outing in Thursday night’s home three-way scrimmage.
“We played good defense,” Holt said. “Our defense played really well.”
The Warriors will begin their 2024 football season at 7 p.m. this Thursday against the Quinton Savages at Smokey Cox Stadium.
“We’re definitely ready to get it started,” Holt said. “If you don’t play Zero Week, you have four days of practice, then four days of practice and a scrimmage and another four days of practice and a scrimmage. You have about 12 to 13 days where you’re just hitting each other, and you don’t get a chance to hit somebody else. It’s a lot more easy to get excited about playing a game than going to practice.”
Holt said the Warriors will be healthy going into this week’s season opener.
