Two ladies with Vian connections participated in the Annual Pow Wow and Cultural Gathering of the Northern Cherokee Nation during the weekend of September 20-22 in Clinton, Mo. Louise Crum Murphy, class of Vian High School 1952 (second from left), and Lorene Crum Tyler, class of 1960 (third from left) have been attending the annual event for 15 years. “We’ve really connected with some of our people and enjoy seeing them once a year,” Murphy said. Murphy lives in Waco, Texas, with her daughter Twilla Keaton (at left). Kenn Grey Elk, Chief of the Northern Cherokee Nation (right) is one of less than 1,000 people who read, write, and speak the Cherokee language in the United States. Tyler lives in Vian and is active with the Red Hats Society, and attends ballgames for her great-grandsons, who currently attend Vian Public Schools.
