Vian Wolverines claw Wilburton Diggers, welcome Morris to town this week
By David Seeley Sports Editor

WILBURTON — The Vian Wolverines made sure early on that there would not be any letdown after the homecoming win over Henryetta, and made sure of that early.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 35-0 lead after a quarter en route to a 56-13 road District 2AII-4 victory over the host Wilburton Diggers last Friday night.

Maysn Wright scored a hat trick of touchdowns in the first period on runs of 65, 60 and 14 yards.

The other two firstquarter TDs for the Wolverines (8-0 overall, 5-0 in district play) came on a 19-yard run by Draighton Fletcher and a 19-yard touchdown pass from Cash Trammel to Jacob Brannick. Mikayah Mendoza hit all five extra points for a 35-0 lead after a period.

Brannick caught his second TD pass from Trammel, this one an 8-yarder, with 9:35 left before halftime. Mendoza’s PAT put Vian ahead 42-0 at halftime.

Adolf Stahl returned a punt 43 yards to paydirt with 3:55 remaining in the third quarter. Mendoza’s extra point upped the Wolverines’ advantage to 49-0 after three periods.

After the Diggers (0-8, 0-5) scored twice in the fourth quarter to get rid of the goose egg on the scoreboard, Vian scored its final touchdown on a 15-yard TD run by Kaden Fulbright with 3:05 left in the game. Mendoza hit the PAT.

For the game, Wright rushed for 170 yards and three TDs, while Trammel threw for 33 yards and two touchdowns. Tyson Murphy had a 60-yard interception to thwart a Wilburton drive.

The Wolverines will be at home for their final two games of the regular season, the first of which will be against Morris at 7 p.m. this Friday at St. John Stadium.
