The Webbers Falls Warriors wanted to make sure they did not drop into the fourthplace slot in District BII-4 so as to not have to face a district champion in this Friday night’s Class B, Division II playoff opener. They succeeded.
On a dreary, rainy and damp night at Smokey Cox Stadium, the Warriors blanked the Gans Grizzlies 52-0 on Senior Night in a game that ended at halftime due to the 45-point mercy rule.
The Warriors (6-4 overall, 3-2 in district play) will travel to meet the Waukomis Chiefs (8-2) at 7 p.m. next Friday at Lovell Field in Waukomis.
“Waukomis is very good,” Webbers Falls coach Trent Holt said. “We need all the momentum we can get. They’re a good football team. It’s definitely going to be a chore to beat them. We’re going to have to play really well.”
The Grizzlies (1-9, 0-5) ended the season with a six-game losing streak.
The Warriors jumped out to a 30-0 lead after a quarter, then used a 22-point second period to put the game into mercy-rule status.
Aiden Turley rushed for 139 yards and scored four touchdowns on runs of 46, 20, 14 and 28 yards.
Caden Cowan scored on a 7-yard TD run, Elliott Kunkel had a 4-yard touchdown run and Dawson Littlefield had a 3-yard TD run.
“They had a blast,” Holt said about his players’ thoughts about the victorious contest. “Gans fumbled the ball six times, and I think we dropped one (center) snap or two the whole time we ran it and never lost a fumble. That was pretty impressive.”
