Board approves final payment for new high school

The Vian Board of Education met on Nov. 11 for a brief yet impactful session, during which board members approved the final payment for the new high school building project and discussed plans for upcoming school improvements.

The highlight of the evening came from Superintendent John Brockman, who announced that the $400,099 payment to Beshears Construction Company was the final bill for the new high school project. With all construction expenses, including the costs for furniture, fixtures, and electronics, now paid off, the project was completed under budget by approximately $60,000. The remaining balance in the building fund will be reserved for future maintenance and potential upgrades to district facilities.

In addition to the final construction payment, the board approved expenditures from the general fund totaling $151,242, which includes funds for a new tutoring program at Vian Middle School, extensive plumbing repairs, and the ongoing construction of a new fence at the football stadium. According to meeting minutes, work on the iron portions of the fence has already begun.

During a facilities update, Brockman also discussed early planning for the demolition of parts of the old high school building. The board is considering saving a portion of the building for extracurricular activities, but discussions are still in the early stages.

Regarding the Oklahoma School Report Cards, the board reviewed preliminary information from the Oklahoma State Department of Education. Early data shows improved career opportunity scores at the high school level but also indicates potential concerns regarding student attendance in some grades. The board will revisit the top- ic when more detailed data becomes available.

During public comment, LaCreesha Harrison addressed the board about sports opportunities for Pre-K and Kindergarten students. While Vian Public Schools do not run youth athletic leagues, board member Joe Paul Simon thanked her for taking such interest in her child. Brockman and the rest of the board members expressed its support for local community leagues and stated that the district often provides facilities for these programs.

In other business, the board unanimously approved the minutes of the October meeting and finalized the dates for 2025 board meetings, which will be held the second Monday of each month, with some exceptions. The meeting concluded with the waiving of an executive session, and accepted the resignation of Deanna Quarles.
