WAGONER — The Vian Wolverines had just one more hurdle to climb. If they do, they will be not only state champions but went through the season undefeated.
The Wolverines clawed the Colcord Hornets 35-16 in last Friday night’s Class 2A, Division II state semifinals to earn a spot in the state title game.
The Wolverines (130) will meet the Davis Wolves (9-4) at 1 p.m. this Saturday at the University of Central Oklahoma’s Chad Richison Stadium in Edmond for the Class 2A, Division II state title — the first one ever handed out by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association.
Masyn Wright’s 11yard touchdown run with 3:55 left in the first period put the Wolverines on the board. Mikayah Mendoza’s extra point put Vian ahead 7-0 after a quarter.
Wright got his hat trick of TD runs in the first half in the second quarter, scoring on touchdown runs of 9 and 65 yards. Mendoza’s PATs after each score upped the Vian advantage to 21-0 with 6:18 left before halftime.
After the Hornets (11-2) scored to cut the deficit to 21-8 with 5:07 remaining in the first half, Wright threw the first of two TD passes as he hit Jacob Brannick on a 36-yard touchdown pass with 4:51 left in the first half. Mendoza’s extra point gave Vian a 28-8 halftime advantage.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Wolverines put the icing on the cake as Wright threw an 8-yard TD pass to Tristan Wiley with 9:47 left to play. Mendoza hit the extra point to make it 35-8 in Vian’s favor.
The Hornets scored their final points of the season with 15 seconds remaining in the game.
For the contest, Wright rushed for 162 yards and three TDs, while throwing for 63 yards and two more touchdowns.
Brannick caught seven passes for 133 yards and a TD, while Wiley hauled in an 8-yard touchdown pass. Adoff Stahl picked off a pass on defense.
