Vian wrestlers get season going against Gore, Checotah
By David Seeley Sports Editor,

The 2024-25 wrestling season got underway for the Vian Wolverines as they had back-to-back home duals against county rival Gore on Thursday night and against Checotah on Friday night at B.J. Traw Gymnasium.

While no actual score was kept in the Gore dual, two actual dual matches took place, with the Wolverines getting a pinfall win in 1:32 by Gunner Richey over Gore’s Devon Mannon and Gore’s Caydin Mc-Cartney got a 21-3 technical fall win over Isaac Mazzerelli at heavyweight. If a score would have been kept, the Wolverines would have gotten a 48-23 victory.

In four exhibition matches, Gore won three of them as Bladin McCartney pinned Jace Huff in 41 seconds, Marcus Scott pinned Cooper Risley in 138 and Antonio Parker pinned Huff in 2:16.

The lone Vian win in exhibition matches came from Adoff Stahl, who defeated Cole Brooksher 12-2.

In the junior high dual, Vian defeated Gore 29-18.

On Friday night, the Wolverines defeated the Wildcats 42-24.

Of the four matches competed, both Checotah and Vian won two apiece, with the wins for the Wolverines (2-0) coming from Lance Jordan with a pinfall win in 1:22 over Diesel Purdom at 132 pounds and Stahl with a 40-second pinfall victory over Xain Stallings at 138.

Charles Lucas (106 pounds), Kyle Major (120), Richey (157), Tristan Wiley (190) and Garritt Hunt (heavyweight) all won matches by forfeit.

Two Lady Wolverines saw action on the night as Maddison Turman lost her exhibition match by technical fall to Checotah’s Annabelle Mowdy, and Carmen Rautenberg was pinned by Mowdy in 2:19.

In three exhibition matches, Stahl defeated Checotah’s Woodrow Spears 5-3 and Richey got a 16-0 technical fall victory over Jaxon Gearhart. Purdom pinned Vian’s Kingston Lee in 52 seconds.

The Wolverines will be idle until participating in a road dual next Friday night at Wagoner.
