Genesis 2:7 “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
Lets begin with the
Michael Martin thought of a living soul, please. We have had men ponder the sou* centuries before p. this modern age that does not seem to care about the soul. Job is the oldest manuscript in the Bible. Job made a statement that should allow men a deeper look into their lives. Job 12:10 “In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.”
If we look at this a little deeper, man is listed in two parts. The first is the soul, then Job speaks of the breath or body. In this he separates body and soul. Daniel continues the thought by speaking of men in general and the king in particular when he said: Daniel 5:23 But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified: Notice the last part of the verse… ’’the God in whose hand thy breath is”. Daniel knew that man cannot live outside of Gods wishes. His hand could close at any moment to end that life, yet the eternal soul will go on.
Socrates, the world’s first free thinker, believed the soul is immortal. He also argued that death is not the end of existence. It is merely separation of the soul from the body. He spoke also about the physical world in which we live—comprising all that we can see, hear, taste, smell, and feel—belongs to the former realm. All aspects of our physical world are continually changing, transforming, disappearing. In contrast, the unchanging, eternal, perfect realm includes the intellectual essences of the universe, concepts such as truth, goodness, and beauty.
Now we know that Socrates never thought himself a prophet of God. He simply mused about the things of value that are represented in the commonplace. He thought he knew, he spoke of things he imagined, he taught a line of deeper thinking. People listened. His thoughts were recorded.
Plato even listened and sought deeper things. Plato argues that the soul is of such and indestructible nature that not even evil can destroy the soul, for the soul, in its very essence, is immortal, and, hence, indestructible. Plato also maintains that souls are fixed, so that the number always remains the same; therefore, the soul must be immortal by nature.
Now both of these men are renowned for their wisdom and their deeper thinking. They THOUGHT they knew that the body and soul were different and separate although abiding together for the time of life.
Jesus KNOWS that the soul is eternal. For those who believe n Him, He tells us about the future of our soul.
John 14:2-3 “In my Fathers house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
This is the final home of the believers soul, while the non-believer has a much different destination. We could talk about the rich man ans Lazarus in Luke 16, but I think Id rather show ou what awaits those outside the elief in Christ as a final judgment against them.
Revelation 20:11-15 “And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”
All souls will be judged by the books on what they did in their lives. Every soul will have the condemnation of their life’s works judged by the Giver of that Life. Their eternal destination has been set since before the foundation of the world. Their punishment is eternal torment in the lake of fire.
Notice the last of the verse, please. It speaks of those written in the Book of Life. That is Christians who in their physical life received Christ and inherited eternal life in Him.
Slow your busy life for an hour and think about eternity and where your place will be, heaven in a mansion with Christ or the lake of fire with the Devil. It is your choice, but only while you are alive.
