Gore basketball teams go 2-2 last week
By David Seeley Sports Editor

The Gore High School basketball teams each went 2-2 last week as both teams got Riverside Conference sweeps over the Webbers Falls squads on Dec. 13 in Webbers Falls and the Gans teams on Thursday night at Gore Event Center.

However, both the Pirates and Lady Pirates lost their road conference games Friday night at Okay and their road games Saturday afternoon at Central.

The Pirates defeated the Warriors 56-38 on Dec. 13 at Webbers Falls Event Center and downed the Grizzlies 64-17 at home Thursday night for their two conference wins of last week, but they ended the week with a road conference game 80-47 to the Okay Mustangs on Friday night and lost a heartbreaking 57-54 Saturday afternoon road game to the Tigers.

The Lady Pirates had a similar week, beating the Lady Warriors 49-26 on Dec. 13 and defeating the Lady Grizzlies 49-20 Thursday night at home, but losing 60-28 to the Lady Mustangs on Friday night and falling 60-40 to the Lady Tigers on Saturday afternoon.

In the boys’ win over Webbers Falls, the Pirates (7-5 overall, 4-1 in Riverside Conference play) doubled the Warriors 14-7 in the first quarter en route to a 26-15 halftime lead and a 39-23 advantage after three periods.

For the game, Gore put a trio of players into double figures, led by Cain Cooper’s gamehigh 14 points, followed by Tate Brooksher’s 13 points and Eli Munson’s 11 points. Nash Thouvenel scored nine points, followed by Ayden Cox with four points, Duane Hunt with three points and Keeton Rowe with two points.

In the boys’ Thursday night home win over Gans, the Pirates scored the first four points of the opening period en route to a 17-6 lead after the first quarter.

The Pirates continued pulling away from the Grizzlies as Gore outscored Gans 15-4 in the second quarter to go into halftime ahead 3210 en route to a 44-15 advantage heading into the final period.

About halfway through the fourth quarter, a running clock was instituted.

For the game, Rowe and Hunt led Gore with a game-high nine points each, followed by Brooksher with eight points, Munson, Gabe Hefley and Logan Markou each with seven points, Cox, Cooper and Thouvenel with four points each, Cruz Ward with three points and Benson Hunt with two points.

In the boys’ loss Friday night at Okay, the Mustangs jumped out to a 19-7 lead after a quarter and were never headed.

In defeat, Cooper scored 19 points and Munson added 14 points to lead Gore, followed by Brooksher with eight points, Rowe with four points and Hefley with two points.

In the boys’ loss to Central, the Tigers rallied from a 44-42 thirdquarter deficit with a 1510 final period to hold off the Pirates.

In defeat, Cooper scored a game-high 18 points to lead Gore, followed by Brooksher, Munson and Thouvenel with nine points each, Duane Hunt with four points, Rowe with three points and Ward with two points.

In the girls’ win over Webbers Falls, trailing 18-17 at halftime, the Lady Pirates (4-8 overall, 2-3 in Riverside Conference play) put away the game with a 20-0 third quarter to take a 38-17 lead into the final period.

For the game, Kennedy Williams scored a game-high 26 points to lead Gore, followed by Rayleigh Moore with nine points, River Shoemake with seven points, Emily Daily with three points and Ricki Huckbay and CoCo Carter with two points apiece.

In the girls’ home victory Thursday night over Gans, despite not hitting hardly any shots in the first half, a basket by Williams and a free throw by Carter gave Gore a 19-17 halftime lead. The Lady Pirates started hitting their shots in the second half, as well as playing good defense. Gore scored the third quarter’s first 12 points to put the Lady Pirates ahead 31-17 on Daily’s 3-point basket with 1:26 left in the period. They never were headed from there.

For the game, Gore put a trio of players into double figures, led by Daily’s game-high 13 points and 10 points apiece from Williams and Huckbay. Moore had seven points, followed by Carter with six points and Sophie O’Connor with three points.

In the girls’ Friday night loss to Okay, the Lady Mustangs corralled the Lady Pirates early, leading 24-4 after a period and never were threatened thereafter.

In defeat, Williams led Gore with nine points, followed by Huckbay with five points, Carter with four points, Moore and O’Connor with three points each and Shoemake and Lily Wooten with two points apiece.

In the girls’ Saturday afternoon loss to Central, the Lady Tigers broke a 10-all tie early in the second quarter by ending the first half on an 18-4 run to take a 28-14 halftime lead and were never headed.

In defeat, Daily scored 15 points and Huckbay added 10 points to lead Gore, followed by Williams with eight points, Moore with four points, Shoemake with two points and O’Connor with a free throw.
