Vian boys go 2-1 last week; Lady Wolverines suffer three home losses
By David Seeley Sports Editor,

The Vian Wolverines went 2-1 last on the basketball court at B.J. Traw Gymnasium.

After losing 61-53 to the Keys Cougars on Dec. 14, the Wolverines ended the week with two straight home wins in less than 24 hours as they pummeled the Cave Springs Hornets 71-33 on Friday night, then got past the Atoka Wampus Cats 51-45 on Saturday afternoon.

However, it was a rough week for the Lady Wolverines as they lost all three home games last week — 71-13 to Keys on Dec. 14, 54-51 to Cave Springs on Friday night and 59-16 to Atoka on Saturday afternoon.

In the boys’ win over Cave Springs, Joe O’Neal scored 19 points and Masyn Wright added 18 points to lead the Wolverines (5-6).

In the boys’ victory over Atoka, Wright led Vian with 15 points.

In the boys’ loss to Keys, the Cougars led 12-10 after a quarter, 3325 at the half and 46-34 after three quarters.

However, the Wolverines (0-2 in Big 8 Conference play) tried to get the come-frombehind victory as they outscored the Cougars 19-15 in the final period, but their rally came up short.

In defeat, Vian put three players into double figures, led by O’Neal with 18 points, followed by Wright with 15 points and Cash Trammel with 14 points. Trace Sanders added six points.

In the girls’ loss to Keys, the Lady Cougars jumped out to a 19-2 lead after a quarter to take control of the game.

In defeat, Kiah Richardson scored 10 points to lead the Lady Wolverines (2-9, 0-2), followed by Halli Russell with two points and Kala Gibbins with a free throw.

In the girls’ loss to Cave Springs, the Lady Hornets jumped out to a 19-3 lead after a quarter en route to a 36-20 halftime advantage.

The Lady Wolverines made a charge in the second half as they outscored the Lady Hornets 31-18, but their rally came up short.

In defeat, Avery Wright scored a gamehigh 26 points to lead Vian, followed by Rebel Simon and Rayleigh Terrill with seven points each, Gibbins with five points, Blazi Dieter and Shelbie Glass each with two points and Russell and Jaiden Soap with a free throw apiece.

In the girls’ loss to Atoka, the Lady Wampus Cats clawed their way out to a 24-10 lead after the opening period, which became a 3214 halftime advantage. A 14-0 third quarter by Atoka sealed the deal, putting the Cats ahead 46-14 going into the final period.

In defeat, Glass led Vian with six points, followed by Wright and Terrill with three points each and Russell and Richardson with two points apiece.
