Former Vian Lady Wolverine softball player Maisie Wells is ready to follow in her older sister Greenlee’s footsteps with the Eastern Oklahoma State College Lady Mountaineers softball team.
So far, college life has been fun for Wells.
“It’s been going really good,” Wells said. “It’s definitely been a big change to Vian, but it’s been really good. I’m having fun.”
Her college career technically began in the fall with softball scrimmages, which Wells said went good for not only her but her new team.
“It went really good,” she said. “We have a brand new team compared to what we had last year, so there was a lot of figuring out — but it went really good. We found where we need to play and found who we need to put out there. We found all our strengths.”
The end result of those fall scrimmages has made EOSC coach Kendra Whisenhunt play the former Lady Wolverine — as a centerfielder.
“As of right now, I’m in center (field),” Wells said. “I was there the whole fall. That’s where I’m hoping to play throughout the season. I actually started playing center field the last (spring) semester of senior year (at Vian in slow pitch), so it’s not foreign to me.”
Since older sister Greenlee, whose college junior season of softball with the Oklahoma Baptist University Bison will begin today, played for the Lady Mountaineers, Wells said that helped her get an idea of what she would be entering once coming to EOSC in Wilburton.
“I definitely feel like it benefited me in a lot of ways because I got to see how the coaches coached on the field,” Wells said. “I got to see how they give credits to their players. I got to learn from Greenlee how the environment is here (at EOSC in Wilburton) and what to expect when I came in — especially for my first-ever college game. I learned a lot of what to expect and what to do in the hard situations.”
Wells officially was slated to begin her college softball career Tuesday afternoon with a home doubleheader against Paris (Texas) Junior College in Wilburton. She said she can’t wait to begin her newest chapter in her softball career.
“I’m really excited,” Wells said. “There’s a lot of nerves, but I’m just trusting that God is going to meet me throughout the season. I’m just putting all my trust and faith in Him. I’m just trusting that He has a good plan and a good outcome for us this season.”
