It was a rough week of hoops last week for the Webbers Falls High School basketball teams as they suffered a pair of Riverside Conference sweeps at the hands of the Porum and McCurtain squads.
The week started with the Porum teams sweeping the Webbers Falls squads as the Lady Panthers handled the Lady Warriors 64-33, followed by the Panthers defeating the Warriors on Jan. 28 at Webbers Falls Event Center.
On Friday night in McCurtain, the host McCurtain teams swept the Webbers Falls squads as the Lady Bulldogs growled their way to a 69-32 win over the Lady Warriors, then the ’Dogs held off the Warriors 64-62. In the girls’ loss to Porum, the Lady Panthers, playing their first game since Jan. 17 after not being able to play in their own Cross Telephone Invitational Basketball Tournament that took place Jan. 2025, jumped out to a 1714 lead after a quarter but used a 19-4 second quarter to increase their advantage to 36-18 at halftime, which became a 49-29 lead going into the final period.
In defeat, Bridgette Baer scored nine points to lead the Lady Warriors (9-8 overall, 2-4 in Riverside Conference play), followed by Cheyanne Herrier and Bailey Ward with seven points each, Kailey Mannon, River Harrison and Abbie Patterson each with two points and Madison Smith with a free throw.
In the boys’ loss to Porum, the Panthers led 13-7 after a quarter, 2418 at the half and 43-33 after three periods.
In defeat, Thadan Yandell scored 16 points and Chevy Cole added 10 points to lead the Warriors (5-12, 1-5), followed by Gunner Shelby with nine points and Luke Pierce and Brutus Robinson with five points apiece.
In the girls’ loss to McCurtain, the Lady Bulldogs clawed their way to an 18-7 lead after a period and never looked back.
In defeat, Harrison led Webbers Falls with 17 points, followed by Baer and Audri Spears with five points each, Herrier with four points and Paizley Turley with a free throw.
In the boys’ loss to McCurtain, the Bulldogs rallied from a 2725 halftime deficit with a 22-12 third quarter to take a 47-39 lead going into the final period. The Warriors tried to get the come-from-behind win as they outscored the ’Dogs 23-18 in the fourth quarter but the rally fell two points short.
In defeat, Webbers Falls put a trio of players into double figures, led by Shelby and Yandell with 15 points each and Eli Hefflin with 12 points. Robinson had eight points, followed by Cole with six points, Pierce with four points and Elliott Kunkel with two points.
The Webbers Falls teams found out Friday they and Cameron’s squads will be sent to Red Oak for their Class A District Tournament, that will begin Feb. 13-15.
