POTEAU — The Vian Wolverines baseball team dropped its season opener Saturday afternoon, losing 6-5 to the Poteau Pirates at Town Creek Park.
The Pirates (1-0) broke a 5-all tie on Caston Fox’s RBI double for a 6-5 lead for the Pirates.
The Wolverines (01) took a 1-0 lead on Michael Polecat’s RBI groundout in the first inning. Polecat’s sacrifice fly in the second inning doubled Vian’s advantage to 2-0.
After the Pirates took a 4-2 lead with a fourrun fourth inning, the Wolverines cut the deficit to 4-3 in the fifth inning as Riley Ellis scored on a passed ball.
After the Pirates regained a 5-3 lead in their half of the fifth inning, the Wolverines tied the game at 5-all on a passed ball and Jeremiah Marshall’s basesloaded walk in the sixth inning.
For the game, Draighton Fletcher doubled for Vian.
Kaden Fulbright (01) suffered the loss in relief, going the final two innings but striking out three batters. Ellis started the game and went the first four innings with two Ks.
After the Wolverines entertain the Gore Pirates in the home opener on Monday, they will welcome Spiro to town for a 4:30 p.m. Friday game with the district rematch taking place at 1 p.m. Saturday in Spiro.
