The Gore Lady Pirates got their softball season off and running last week, splitting their first two games of the season.
The Lady Pirates won their home opener 9-7 over McCurtain on March 3, but lost 12-4 on the road to Keota on Thursday afternoon.
In the win over Mc-Curtain, the Lady Pirates (1-1) led 4-0 after an inning and 7-2 after two innings before the Lady Bulldogs cut their deficit to 8-7 after four innings. A single run in the fifth inning for Gore proved to be a big insurance run. Ricki Huckbay was 3-for-3 with a double, two runs batted in and two runs scored, Hallie Brewer was 2-for-3 with a run scored, Maddison Douglas was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, Sophie O’Connor hit a first-inning, grand-slam home run and River Shoemake doubled with an RBI and a run scored for Gore.
Mylee Bruce (1-1) got the win, getting three strikeouts.
In the loss to Keota, the Lady Lions, who trailed 2-0 after three innings, scored eight runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the seventh inning for a 12-2 lead.
In defeat, Douglass doubled and scored once, while Huckbay, Shoemake, O’Connor, Bruce, Emily Daily and Cheyenne Davidson all singled for Gore.
Bruce took the loss, despite five Ks.
