Keys Public Schools teacher Lisa Burton will receive the William D. Pennington Award at the Oklahoma Historical Society’s annual awards banquet on March 20, at 6 p.m. at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City. Burton will receive $500 and a plaque of recognition.
Burton was nominated by Steven Goss, high school principal for Keys Public Schools. Goss said Burton fosters “an environment where all perspectives are valued.”
He said she brings history to life, which allows her students to foster “a deep connection to the material.” Goss ended the nomination by saying Burton’s “dedication and multifaceted contributions make her an invaluable asset to her students and community.”
The William D. Pennington Award is presented to an outstanding social studies teacher who demonstrates effective teaching by any measure of excellence.
Dr. AJ Griffin will be the keynote speaker. Griffin spent six years in the Oklahoma State Senate and is now the CEO of the Potts Family Foundation. Joe Dorman, a former state representative and current CEO of the Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy, will serve as emcee for this event.
